Brij Lok Madhuri

Since 1999, Dr. Devendra Sharma serves as a communication consultant, designer, performer, and writer for Brij Lok Madhuri, a non-profit organization pioneering in the use of folk performing traditions for purposive social change. Brij Lok Madhuri was founded in the 1970s by world-renowned folk guru, Pandit Ram Dayal Sharma. Brij Lok Madhuri has been invited by the top government and non-government institutions of India to perform and train artists to communicate pro-social messages through performances in Indian villages and cities. Through this organization, Dr. Sharma has used folk performance forms to successfully propagate contemporary social and educative messages, such as through a workshop on "Folk Theater for Social Change" at Central Michigan University, USA, and a folk media campaign on family planning for better health in Uttar Pradesh, India. In order to achieve the organization's goal of using folk media to communicate contemporary social and health messages, Dr. Sharma has created new folk performance scripts on topics such as HIV-AIDS prevention, maternal and child health, and women's empowerment. Dr. Sharma has also trained professionals of various organizations working in the fields of health and social develpment, such as Population Communication International (PCI) in New York, Thompson Social, Population Foundation of India (PFI), and Center for Media Studies in Delhi, India.
